Meet the breeder

I'm Margretta L., the breeder behind Nixie Kennels located in Fife Lake, MI. We are a small scale breeder that has produced top quality show dogs and perfect family pets. Our dogs are highly intelligent and have been successful in a variety of different performance sports as well as in the conformation ring. Most importantly, we strive to produce dogs with personalities suitable for active people and families.

  • Why did you start breeding?

    I grew up showing Papillons in 4H and taking the time to learn animal behavior and care. After college, my family and I purchased our first Pumi, Frida, in 2016 to compete with in AKC conformation and performance sports. Our second dog, a Shar-Pei named Puffer, was added to our family in 2018. After completing both their health tests we made the decision to breed them in order to contribute to preservation of these amazing breeds worldwide.

  • What makes your program special?

    As a small scale breeder, I commit a lot of time to planning and raising our litters. We raise our puppies on the Puppy Culture Program and do Volhard Puppy Aptitude Tests to help ensure we place each puppy in the home with the best fit. I have travelled to Hungary to learn more about Pumi from long time breeders in their country of origin, as well as travelled to the World Dog Show in Finland in 2025.

  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

    Our Chinese Shar-Pei puppies include fawn and red fawn. Pumi puppies include fawn, silver gray, gray, and black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.

  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Margretta

Margretta has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

Margretta partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 8 weeks old.

“We match our puppies by the temperament best suited to their new family while also keeping any owner preferences in mind (male/female, color, etc). If we do not have the perfect match in one litter, we can refund your deposit or carry it over into our next litter. The most important piece of breeding is making sure our puppies and their families are the perfect fit. ”

Price

Puppy prices include a $500 refundable deposit and $2,000 final payment, before taxes & fees.

“Price includes AKC registration, first set of vaccinations, AKC Reunite microchip and lifetime enrollment, health certificate, complete Optimal Selection genetic panel, custom puppy pack and lifelong breeder support. All of our puppies are priced the same regardless of type of registration, sex, or color. Each puppy receives the same amount of exceptional care and effort. Your deposit reserves a spot in a litter.”

Margretta may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase.   • Hip Dysplasia

    Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

    Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Patellar Luxation

    Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Full Embark Panel, Primary Open Angle Glaucoma and Primary Lens Luxation (POAG/PLL), Shar-Pei Type

    Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
