Q. & A. with Malissa

  • Why did you start breeding?

My first border collie is my heart dog. She is the reason I fell in love with the breed. My little shotgun rider, down for anything, eager to please, life changing dog. To say she has been my best friend for over 13 years is an understatement. Her impact on my life is why I decided to start North Fork Border Collies. Let me help you find your new best friend too!
  • What makes your program special?

We strive for healthy dogs with a medium to high drive, solid temperament, low arousal, good off-switch, and aesthetic structure. Our goal is to produce border collies that are well-balanced, and versatile with the ability to excel in any sporting, working or active companion home. We believe that health, temperament and performance are key variables to consider when breeding border collies.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies have rough coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include tri-color, blue merle, red merle, black, red, white and blue merle, white and red, and white and red merle. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

I found "Pine" (now Cassie) on Good Dog and inquired about her. Malissa reached out to me and we spoke about what I was looking for and the home I have for a puppy. She was very knowledgable about Border Collies and definitely was on par with my own style of caring for dogs. We committed to one of the puppies from her litter. Malissa sent us tons of photos and touched base with us weekly until the final match was made! (Truthfully we fell in love with all of the puppies!). While I wasn't thrilled with matching puppies once she tested temperaments and screened homes, I do believe it is absolutely in the best interest of both puppy and people. I'm so glad I agreed! Malissa factored in that we have a young border already at home. Obviously, thinking of my Lexi meant the world to me. Cassie is a wonderful little girl! We are over the moon she has joined our family.

Malissa of North Fork Border Collies was responsive, kind, and wonderful to work with. Adopting a puppy is a big life event, and though I've had dogs my entire life, I've never purchased a pure breed from a breeder before--let alone one that was two plane rides away from where I lived (Alaska). But my heart chose a particular puppy from North Fork Border Collies, and Malissa helped me make that dream come true. By the time the puppy, Novel North Star, was ready to be picked up I already felt I knew him, thanks to Malissa's photos and regular updates and communication. He made the long journey to Alaska like a champ, and seemed to easily adjust to his new life with basic training--crate and potty and general obedience--already well under way. He arrived in my life happy, healthy, and wonderful.
