Meet the breeder

I'm Monica S., the breeder behind Oasis Companion Canines located in Yucca Valley, CA. I breed rough/smooth collie companion crosses; stable temperaments and good health are our main priorities. My dogs are fully health-tested with OFA for hip and elbow X-rays, cardiac, eyes, as well as DNA testing for genetic conditions with Embark, PawPrint Genetics, GenSol, and Animal Genetics.

Q. & A. with Monica

  • Why did you start breeding?

As a KPA-CTP and Fear Free Certified trainer as well as a former shelter/rescue volunteer and pet sitter, I’ve met a lot of dogs in incompatible homes. I love collies dearly but their average COI (level of inbreeding) is very high which contributes to health issues and decreased lifespans. Finding the Functional Dog Collaborative (FDC) gave me the courage and support to pursue companion crosses.
  • What makes your program special?

We cross our collies with small companion breeds for increased longevity correlated with smaller size, as well as low COIs for genetic diversity and robust health. Temperament is our highest priority. We avoid dogs with any family history of behavior issues like DA/HA (dog or human aggression), SSA/SA (same sex aggression or separation anxiety), RG (resource guarding), or high prey drive.
  • What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Companion Cross puppies include small, medium, and large sizes. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our Collie puppies include smooth and rough coat varieties. Companion Cross puppies include long and smooth coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Collie puppies include sable merle and white and sable and white. Companion Cross puppies include brindle, cream, red, black and tan, black, fawn, black and white, blue, and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
