Meet the breeder

I'm Erin, the breeder behind October Hounds located in Star, ID. Our dachshunds are our babies. They are with us in our home all day everyday, loved on and raised by our large family. We believe in responsible and careful breeding, and the importance of upholding the breed standards/good conformation. Our dogs are all genetic tested through Embark. We have also recently added the recommended OFA testing for dachshunds ( Cardiac, eyes, patellas) to our health screening process. When you join our puppy family, you are taking home a well socialized pup who is up to date on vaccinations, deworming, and has been fully examined by our veterinarian. Our pups go to their new homes with AKC Registration paperwork ( Limited or Full AKC depending on arrangements), a prepaid AKC Reunite microchip kit with lifetime registration, comfort blanket, Lamb Chop stuffie with the scent of mom and siblings on it, as well as a puppy tote/ welcome kit with toys, transition food, and information. ❤️ Great communication with/from the potential Forever Family is very important to us, please note that the inability to respond to messages in a timely fashion will be interpreted as "no longer interested" in our pup. These babies deserve forever homes that are truly excited and invested in them. ❤️🐾 Thank you!

Q. & A. with Erin

  • Why did you start breeding?

I fell in love with dachshunds as a child. We used to watch AKC shows and "pick" our favorites to root for. My favorite group was the Hound group, and the dachshunds in particular. 💚🐾 I wanted to one day be blessed with a lap full of those beautiful and personality-filled creatures! A love for both dachshunds and horses runs in our family. Grandparents, parents, siblings, and cousins have owned dachshunds. I brought home my first dachshund in 2002, a smooth black & tan that I named Greta. After getting my second in 2003, a stunning longhaired shaded red named Sable, I was a fully fledged Crazy Dachshund Lady. Seven more dachshunds have joined our family over the years. I have always enjoyed educating myself on breed standards and characteristics, and when all of our children grew old enough to be a little more self sufficient, my research took a turn toward personally getting involved in bettering the breed. With our newest addition Sabina, and some great new mentorship, we plan to soon enter the world of AKC conformation shows.
  • What makes your program special?

Our program is different from most others for several reasons, but one of the big ones is that we go very slowly, plan painstakingly, and rarely have litters. My goals for our program are long term. I want to produce jaw-dropping, show quality dogs that can be competitive in conformation shows and field trials. We want to contribute to strengthening the breed, not flood the country with mediocre examples of dachshunds to make a quick sale. I believe that If we actually invest all the time and money and effort that we should into our dogs, and breed ethically, we cannot be in this expecting to actually make a profit, only to help offset the cost of this Passion Project. I feel blessed to be involved.
  • What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Our puppies include miniature and standard sizes. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies have longhaired coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include piebald, cream, black and tan, chocolate and cream, black and cream, and dapple. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Erin

Erin has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

Erin partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 6 weeks old.

“🌻 We wait a bit longer to list and begin to place puppies than most do! I feel it is important to wait until conformation/ structure and temperament can be assessed around that 6 week mark, to do our best at matching the right puppy to the right family. ”

Price

Puppy prices include a $500 non-refundable deposit and between $2,100 - $4,500 final payment, before taxes & fees.

“Each puppy comes with AKC registration, AKC Reunite microchip, comfort blanket and puppy welcome kit with toys and information, first round of shots, deworming, early puppy pad training, and will have been very lovingly socialized with our children and other animals. :). We do charge a deposit to hold your puppy and remove it from our listings. Once we have mutually agreed that a certain puppy is a good fit for your family and you are ready for the next step, I will send a formal deposit request through Good Dog. We allow 24 hours to complete it, and after that time we may move on to the next person on the waitlist. The deposit is put towards the total cost, the remaining balance is due by the time your puppy is 8 weeks old. The deposit is non refundable because we turn away any other interested puppy parents from your reserved pup.”

Contract & health guarantee

Erin may provide a written contract or health guarantee when you purchase a puppy. This helps protect both you and your breeder, ensuring that you both have a clear understanding of the terms of your puppy purchase. If Erin offers a contract or guarantee, the details will be personalized by them. If you have any questions or want to know more, don't hesitate to reach out to Erin directly.

All contracts are handled securely through Good Dog.
