I'm Megan & Shane Z., the breeder behind Salt of the Earth Dachshunds located in Zebulon, NC. All of our dams/sires are tested per the recommendations of the Dachshund Club of America and are thoughtfully paired. We provide a 2 year genetic health guarantee and lifetime breeder support.

Why did you start breeding?
Shane and I share a deep adoration for the Dachshund breed and want to share that with others through our breeding program. We strive to set ourselves apart from other breeding programs by not cutting corners and doing the recommended health testing to ensure to the best of our ability that we are not breeding common health issues for the breed into the puppies we produce in our program.What makes your program special?
We fully health test each of our breeding dogs in accordance with the DCA recommendations, focus on socializing/desensitizing to produce confident & well-rounded puppies, our puppies receive two veterinarian checks & microchip/vaccinations administered by our licensed veterinarian, we pre-register all puppies through both AKC & AKC Reunite for new owners, and provide a generous puppy go-home pack.What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Megan & Shane has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready to reach out, feel free to ask any questions about the breed, their program, or specific puppies.
Together, you’ll choose the puppy that’s right for you, stay in touch with regular updates, and plan how to bring your new puppy home.

Puppy prices include a $500 non-refundable deposit and between $2,300 - $3,000 final payment, before taxes & fees.

“All puppies will be sold on limited AKC registration which means that they are pet only and are not authorized to be bred. Health guarantee, first two sets of vaccinations completed by our licensed veterinarian, microchipped, and socialization that includes ENS/ESI and common household exposures. Deposits are placed to remove the availability of a puppy for sale and is due at the time that you choose your puppy.”

Program update on 09 Oct. •…Vivian visited the home of the Wolfpack yesterday for her CAER exam! Forgive her squinting...this was immediately following her exam and her eyes had been dilated so that the opthalmologist could get a clear view of the internal structure of her eyes. Don't worry, it was just a quick pit-stop on the way back to the car. Happy to report that Dr. Oh found her eyes to be healthy bilaterally!

Litter update on 02 May •…Welcome to the world little nuggets! So proud of Stevie and her 3 littles. They've all gained weight as of 415p today when they were only 14 and 16hrs old! Born 4/30 @ 1127p: Black and Tan 💜 304g -> 318g Born 5/1 @ 102a: Shaded Red 💜 266g -> 289g Born 5/1 @ 115a: Shaded Red 💙 232g -> 247g All are on hold for a minimum of 3 weeks to ensure they're thriving, but likely longer as we evaluate for our keeper.

Litter update on 21 Dec. 2024 •…Tonight is the last sleep together under one roof as Toast heads home with his family tomorrow to live his best life on the beach. This litter has been a dream long in the making, a true labor of love, and the impending 'see you later' is a little sad. This boy has the most amazing family though and we could not be more excited for all of them!

Pheobe is a female Dachshund. Carefully selected as a great representative of her breed, Megan & Shane decided to make her part of their program. Megan & Shane has passed Good Dog’s screening process, which involved a review of their breeding practices, environment, and the mental and physical health of their dogs.

About Vivian
We welcomed Vivian in January of 2025. She is a future Dam here at Salt of the Earth. She is our black and tan dapple diva. Both her dam and sire are Italian imports from Luna Caprese lines; We are very thankful to Fairhaiven's Dachshunds for trusting us with this special girl! She plays hard, but loves even harder. Vivy is sweet and extremely sassy. She's a smack talker when she thinks you're ignoring her! She's routine-driven and likes to keep to a schedule. She knows when meals are the slightest bit overdue and pulls at mom's pant legs to remind her and tell her to hurry up, she also knows when bedtime is and doesn't like to be disturbed unless snacks are involved. One of our favorite things about this girl is the way she frolics when outside playing, there is nothing more cute! It's Vivy Bib's world, we just live in it.

About Kingston
Kingston, born 2/05/2022, is our chocolate and tan Russian import. He is the perfect balance of active and snuggly. He loves to be outdoors playing catch or hearding our daughter's large bounce ball; When he isn't doing that he is constantly running with his nose to the ground sniffing all the things. When Kingston likes something, the best descriptive word to use is 'obsessed'. He is obsessed with his ball, all things that squeak (especially if it is a ball), water, and mom.

About Farrah
We welcomed Farrah in July of 2025. She is a half Russian prospect here at Salt of the Earth. She is our wild child! This girl is beauty, brains, and she embodies her Russian bloodlines well. We love her to pieces and adore her wild spirit that earned her her AKC RN and her nickname of 'Feral Barrel'. She is eager to please and picks up training so easily, we are hopeful to get this girl out competitively in some way in the future.

About Jessie
Jessie, born 10/13/2022, is our sweet black and tan princess. She loves nothing more than to snuggle up with you and get her pets in. Her most notable quirk is laying on her back and getting your attention for belly rubs by waving at you. She often naps in the middle of the floor on her back and is notorious for giving you the side-eye.

About Stevie
Stevie, born 4/23/2023, is our 1/2 Russian shaded red sour patch. She is our social butterfly and rough housing is the name of the game with her. She gets along with everyone and is the only one that our resident cat will play with...sometimes we feel that she thinks she is actually a cat and not a dog.

Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
