I'm Kathy H., the breeder behind Shadowood Australian Shepherds located in North Jackson, OH. Producing healthy, sound dogs that are athletic, loving, faithful and excel in Conformation, Obedience and Rally or that hiking buddy, I focus on health & temperament first & foremost. I try to place each puppy with an enriching and loving family complementary to their personality and ability!
Q. & A. with Kathy
Why did you start breeding?
As a breeder of Tennessee Walkers and Arabian horses, it was a small step to breeding dogs. I love puppies and seeing them excel with their new owners be it dock diving, obedience, fast cat, rally or conformation is truly the real bonus!
I love seeing the new owners fall in love with the breed and have had many come back for a second member for the family
What makes your program special?
I feel my program stands out because of my well researched pedigrees, good genetics, athleticism, and intelligence, and just all-around loving family dogs.
I pride myself on my breeding ethics. My dogs undergo extensive genetic testing, and I breed to the standard. My dogs do not live in kennels but have free roam of my home and a several sleep with me in my bedroom
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include red merle and red tri-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Shadowood Australian Shepherds reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Shepherds.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Dentition, Brucellosis
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
