Once upon a time, when the children were grown, the house had become a little too quiet, and we still had far too much energy to behave sensibly, we decided it might be time for one small companion with four paws. What followed was not exactly a quick decision. We searched for almost two years — reading, comparing, waiting, corresponding, asking questions, changing our minds, and starting over. We looked at everything from very established show breeders to shelters and rescue options. After such a long search, we had learned that choosing the right breeder mattered just as much as choosing the right puppy. Then, almost by chance, we came across Susan. We read the reviews, paid attention to the small details, and something about the way people described both her puppies and their experience with her stood out. After nearly two years of looking, those details were exactly what helped us decide that Susan was the person we wanted to trust. We were hoping for a Toy Poodle who was just a little older — past the very fragile newborn stage, but still very much a baby. And then there was Louis. From the very first conversation, Susan was exceptional: intelligent, kind, warm, patient, positive, and incredibly responsive. Communication was excellent from beginning to end. Every question was answered, every detail explained, and we always felt that Louis was being cared for by someone who genuinely loved her puppies. Of course, no good story is complete without a little drama. Louis was in Texas, we were in Illinois, a flight nanny was arranged — and then the weather decided to join the adventure. Tornadoes, delays, changed timing… suddenly the journey of one tiny cream poodle began to feel like a miniature detective story. Our flight nanny was wonderful as well — responsible, calm, and incredibly communicative. The delay was completely out of his control, but while we were waiting at the airport, he kept us updated constantly, almost minute by minute, so we always knew what was happening and never felt left in the dark. I would absolutely recommend using a flight nanny for a puppy. It made the trip much less stressful, Louis was personally accompanied the entire way, and he arrived quickly and safely instead of spending a long time traveling alone. Through all of this, Susan stayed closely involved — calm, reassuring, helpful, and completely dependable. Eventually, after weather, delays, messages, and just enough suspense to keep the story interesting, our tiny traveler finally made his grand entrance in Illinois. And he did not arrive empty-handed. He came with his paperwork and medical records, but also with familiar things from home — his little blanket and toys carrying the scent of the place he knew. That small detail meant so much to us. It showed exactly how Susan treats her puppies: not simply as dogs being sold, but as little lives being carefully handed over to a new family. One month later, Louis has settled in beautifully. He is affectionate, funny, curious, clever, confident, and has already reorganized our daily lives around himself with remarkable efficiency. Susan has also remained kind and responsive after his arrival, which we appreciate very much. Looking back, what we appreciate most is not only that Susan placed such a wonderful puppy with us. She made the entire experience personal, honest, and reassuring. She is a caring, responsible breeder and an exceptionally kind person to deal with. So our little “once upon a time” had a very happy ending: after almost two years of searching, Louis finally made it from Texas to Illinois, quietly took over the household, and somehow it already feels as though he has always belonged here 🐶💕
