I'm Dana R., the breeder behind Shooting Star Border Collies located in Kewaunee, WI. At Shooting Star Border Collies, We strive to breed quality border collies in temperament, structure, and work ethic! All our dogs are registered in AKC, but may also be registered in ABCA, and UKC as well. All of our dogs come from genetic tested and OFA tested lines. Before any dog of ours is considered a breeding candidate, they get their OFAs done and genetic paneling done as well. The tests done are optimal selection wisdom panel, OFA hips, OFA elbows, CAER, and BAER tests.
Q. & A. with Dana
Why did you start breeding?
It has always been something I have been interested in, and luckily I am surrounded by a lot of knowledgeable people who are responsible and ethical breeders who give me lots of guidance!
What makes your program special?
Unlike many breeders, I separate my personal feelings from breeding. I will never breed a dog of mine who doesn't fit the temperament or genetic standards, because of my feelings. I will always put my dogs and any puppies I produce first! The goal is to better the breed before anything else!
What are the different breed coat types in your program?
Our puppies include smooth and rough coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Today we competed in obedience, Amo was so good! We haven't had a lot of heeling practice recently, so that was a little bit rusty, as the past few weeks have been extremely hectic, but she kept her composure very well, and nailed everything else!

After a very uneventful summer competition wise, we are finally back! Between Amo going into season and also the unbearable heat and air quality Wisconsin suffered, we really put a lot of our activities on a back burner, we will bounce back quickly, but it is a shame that a lot of our goals for this year seem to be less attainable. However, we are finally back with fast cat! We did not have the fastest runs ever, but they were very consistent, and she was delighted to be back at it!

This weekend Amo had her first fastcat competition of the year! She did well, the first run was 25 mph, and the second run was a high 27 mph, her first one was slower, because the track was quite boggy and I believe she was getting used to the footing, but by the second run she was right back to where I am used to having her be speed wise!

In 2024 Amo had a very successful year with me💜 goals for this year are to finish health testing, get the next fastCat title, get agility titles, get an obedience title, get the next Fetch title, get the next trick dog title, and potentially a ukc agility title! Quite ambitious, but goals are fun, and then next year will be the big decision on if i will be breeding Amo or not, but so far things are going well!💜

About Amo
Amo is registered through ABCA, AKC, and UKC. She currently competes in agility, obedience, rally, and FastCat. She is one of my demo dogs for classes. She has a great work ethic, but also an excellent off switch at home. Puppies are expected to have similar traits, meaning as long as their mental and physical needs are met, they should not have a problem settling, once they grow up. She's soft enough to accept a gentle correction, but will push through uncomfortable situations without shutting down. Also extremely cuddly and affectionate, with excellent handler focus. She will work for anyone, not just myself.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Excellent level
Shooting Star Border Collies reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Border Collies.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Early Adult Onset Deafness (EAOD), DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
