🐾 So I know everyone is very familiar with AKC registration. While most of our dogs here at Silvermoon are AKC registered we do have a UKC registered girl as well! 🐾 When we think about other registries there usually isn’t much known about them in the general public viewpoint. They’re talked about less commonly. ⚖️ Here’s some great points on the differences between the two registries! ⚖️ 💙 The American Kennel Club (AKC) and the United Kennel Club (UKC) are the two largest dog registries in the United States, but they differ in history, focus, and event atmospheres. 💙 ❤️ History and Status- * AKC (Founded 1884): Operates as a non-profit organization and is the largest, oldest, and most widely recognized U.S. registry. * UKC (Founded 1898): Established 14 years later as a for-profit entity; it is the second-largest all-breed registry in the U.S. 💙 Core Philosophy and Breeds- * AKC: Focuses primarily on traditional breed conformation, structural integrity, and strict adherence to official breed standards. It recognizes roughly 200 breeds. * UKC: Emphasizes the "Total Dog" philosophy, which values structure, temperament, and actual working or hunting ability equally. It recognizes over 300 breeds, including some colors and rare breeds not accepted by the AKC. ❤️ Show and Event Atmosphere- * AKC Events: Tend to be formal and upscale, often requiring business attire, extensive use of professional handlers, and highly competitive large-entry groups. * UKC Events: Known for a relaxed, family-friendly, and beginner-oriented environment where participants can wear casual clothes like jeans.
