Meet the breeder

I'm John S., the breeder behind Sperling's Rough Collies located in Mesa, AZ. We treat all our dogs as members of the family, and believe they are wonderful pets. All our Collies are AKC registered, DNA genetic health tested, micro-chipped, as well as vaccinations, and Vet checks provided. Although we do not enter our dogs in AKC show events, their Pedigrees/heritages can be shown with many past award winners (AM/CAN). Our hope is our puppies find permanent loving families to care for each other, and create fantastic memories together.

Q. & A. with John

  • Why did you start breeding?

As a small family home type breeder, we originally just wanted to enjoy breeding/raising our own instead of always purchasing, often keeping one from a litter to replace an older dog as time passed; or that our kids wouldn't let us sell, ha! I just think Collies are about the best family dog one can have, enjoy them immensely, and also contribute to help preserve the breed for the future at the same time.
  • What makes your program special?

We ensure all our Collies are AKC registered, microchip, vaccinated, and DNA tested to avoid genetic health concerns; as well as pass that information along to any buyers of our pups. This is especially important should any breeding rights be granted to improve and preserve the breed. The pups get a lot of our attention each day, plenty of playing, handling and hugs, potty training, etc., to hopefully become great family pets in a loving home one day.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies have rough coats. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include sable and white, blue merle and white, black white and tan, and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Thank You to John Sperling and Family We are beyond grateful to have adopted our beautiful collie puppy, Skye, from John Sperling Collies. From the moment we stepped into their home, it was clear we were in the company of lifelong collie lovers—true collie enthusiasts who live, work, and play alongside these extraordinary dogs every day. John has been a devoted collie owner and advocate his entire life. His commitment to the breed shines through in every detail—from the well-socialized litter raised right in the heart of their home, to the careful, ethical breeding choices that prioritize health, temperament, and conformation. Their young sire, Taz, is a regal, gentle, and stunning grand champion descendent at just 1.5 years old, and Josie, the sweet blue merle dam, is just as affectionate and graceful. The entire litter was a joy to meet—it was an unforgettable experience to be surrounded by so many loving, curious little collies. Skye has been a dream addition to our family. At just 12 weeks, she’s already calm, affectionate, and incredibly smart—she knows sit, stay, come, and is nearly bell trained for potty. It’s obvious how much time, love, and intentional care the Sperlings devote to their puppies. Skye was raised in a home filled with people, dogs, and even cats, and her sweet, cuddly nature is a testament to that early socialization. John was wonderful to work with through Good Dog—transparent, thoughtful, and completely devoted to the well-being of each pup and adoptive parent. He had Skye fully genetic tested and ensured both parents met stellar breed standards. It was clear how loved Skye was, and we recognize how difficult it must have been to say goodbye. We are so honored they entrusted us with her. To anyone considering one of Skye’s siblings—don’t hesitate. Whether you’re looking for a companion, show prospect, or future breeder, the Sperlings are raising truly exceptional collies. And their love doesn’t stop at adoption: they’ve even offered to board Skye when we travel, which speaks volumes about their lifelong dedication to their dogs and the families who adopt them. Thank you, John, Kim, Sarah and the entire Sperling family. Skye is already so loved, and we feel incredibly fortunate to be part of her journey. Warmly, Rachel and John Muir, and Skye.
