Q. & A. with Susann

  • Why did you start breeding?

We fell in love with the breed and wanted to provide quality pets for other families.
  • What makes your program special?

Our puppies are raised in our home, surrounded by the everyday activity, attention, and affection of family life. From their earliest days, we spend time handling, loving, and getting to know each puppy as an individual. Watching their personalities develop is one of our favorite parts of raising a litter, and it helps us guide families toward a puppy that may be a good fit for their home and lifestyle. After more than 16 years, there is still nothing quite like watching a family fall in love with their new dachshund. We are grateful to play a small part in bringing those families together. — Steber Family Dachshunds

  • Hip Dysplasia (rDVM, not registered)

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
