I'm Lily R., the breeder behind Tango Collies located in Iowa. Founded in 1989, we have dedicated ourselves to exhibiting and raising both rough and smooth Collies that will excel in both a home setting and show ring.
Q. & A. with Lily
Why did you start breeding?
One of my most vivid childhood memories is looking at two Collie pups (one sable and one tri), in the back of a station wagon. A friend of my father had purchased two pups and he was offering one to my father. At the time we were preparing to move from Kansas to Iowa and my mother, being the practical one, said no. Our first pet Collie was purchased a few years later after much pleading when I was old enough to help with the dog. Since then a Collie has been part of my home for most of my adult life. Although the desire to breed a litter of puppies was always present, we spent the initial four years exhibiting Collies and studying the breed standard. The first litter of Tango puppies was not bred until 1994.
What makes your program special?
Much thought and careful planning go into the breeding of each Tango litter. Emphasis is placed on the breeding of healthy, beautiful Collies with sound temperaments, to produce puppies that will excel in both a home setting and show ring. As a result, we breed very few litters. We will only breed a dog when we have the room for the puppies and when we are sure we can give the puppies the time and attention young animals need. All breedings are planned with the Collie standard in mind.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.
