Meet the breeder

I'm Tona B., the breeder behind The Barefield Doxies located in Midland, TX. We specialize in kaninchen and miniature dachshunds with a focus on health, temperament, and quality. Our puppies are raised in our home with 24/7 care, love, and attention from day one.

Q. & A. with Tona

  • Why did you start breeding?

My journey into breeding started at a young age, growing up watching my grandmother raise standard poodles. Seeing the care, patience, and love she gave her dogs sparked my own passion for responsible breeding. Today, I carry that same foundation into raising miniature dachshunds.
  • What makes your program special?

What makes our program special is the love, dedication, and hands-on care we give every dog and puppy. We specialize in kaninchen and miniature sized dachshunds with a focus on health, temperament, structure, and quality bloodlines. From birth, our puppies receive 24/7 care and are raised right in our home, ensuring they are well-socialized, loved, and prepared for their future families.
  • What are the different breed sizes in your program?

Our puppies are miniature size. Sizes will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Our puppies include wirehaired, longhaired, and smooth coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include gray (blue), sable, piebald, cream, red, brindle, black and tan, chocolate and tan, and dapple. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

We absolutely loved working with Tona. We love Pecos who we renamed Ozzy. He’s a beautiful baby and has the best personality. Tona is very knowledgeable and so helpful. We highly recommend her.

I was so nervous about getting another dog after losing my very special companion of 15 years. It took me 3½ years to finally make this decision. Tona was absolutely amazing throughout the entire process. She was incredibly responsive and kept me updated on my little Matthew every step of the way. When it was time, she even traveled to El Paso to personally bring him to me. From the moment I met him, I could tell how well he had been cared for. She also provided a folder with all of his vet checks and vaccinations, which gave me so much peace of mind. Matthew has adjusted so beautifully. He is so social, and so many people have already commented on how wonderful he is. He even went on his first trip with me—flying—and did fantastic! I prayed so much while making this decision and considered several puppies, but I truly feel blessed that I chose Matthew from Tona. My heart is so full of love for this little guy. 🐾💙

Tona was fantastic. We met halfway between our two cities, and she was wonderful throughout the entire process. It was clear that she takes excellent care of her pets and treats them like family, making sure they are happy, healthy, and safe. Our little dachshund is healthy, energetic, and beautiful, and we truly could not be happier. Tona provided all the necessary documentation and has stayed in touch even after we brought our puppy home, answering any questions we had along the way. We are very grateful and extremely happy with our decision.

I couldn't ask for a better experience. Tona was quick to respond to all my questions, sent pictures and videos, and got my puppy safely to North Carolina. The puppy was healthy, well mannered, and overall a perfect little dog.

Bringing our new pup home was such a special experience, and Tona made the whole process so easy and reassuring from start to finish. I adopted one of her older dogs, a 1-year-old male, and he has truly been wonderful. He is such a sweet boy, and I’m so grateful he came from someone who clearly cares so much about her dogs. Tona was amazing to work with. Finn needed to be neutered before coming home, and she took care of everything with his surgery. She also made sure his 1-year vaccines were done, which meant so much to me and made the whole transition feel much less stressful. Since I had to travel to pick him up, she was incredibly accommodating and worked with me to find a day that fit my schedule and budget. She even drove out of her way to meet me at DFW, which I truly appreciated. You can tell Tona genuinely wants the best for her dogs and puts a lot of care into placing them in the right homes. I’m so thankful for how kind, helpful, and thoughtful she was through the entire process. Finn has been such a joy, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Working with Tona and Barefield Doxies has been such a pleasure. From our initial inquiry through our ‘gotcha’ day, Tona was very responsive, kept us up to date and displayed such professionalism and trust. Our beautiful baby boy was well socialized and took to our two adult females very quickly; making for an easy, stress free transition. If you’re looking for a trusted breeder, I highly recommend. It’s been a 5-star experience and we couldn’t be happier.
