Meet the breeder

I'm Susan L., the breeder behind Achates Bostons located in Green Bay, WI. I am a small show breeder of carefully selected Boston’s. My goal is to preserve/better the breed. I only breed 1 or 2 litters a year. We live East of Green Bay on 1.6 acres. And I have an area of my back yard 200’ x 300’ fenced in for the kids. We have in-floor heat which the dogs absolutely love!

Q. & A. with Susan

  • Why did you start breeding?

I fell in love with the Boston Terrier breed and decided to start my own responsible breeding program in 2001 in order to start my incredible line and to share these wonderful dogs with others. I’m passionate about what I do and am dedicated to producing healthy, quality dogs. I serve on the Health Committee for the BTC of America since 2001 and a board member for BTC Milwaukee since 2002, retiring from the Board in 2025.
  • What makes your program special?

I am purposeful in everything that I do regarding my dogs, which includes careful selection of breeding dogs and health testing. My goal is to produce healthy dogs with great temperaments that are exemplary representations of the breed. I bred my first litter in 2001 after completing the Health Testing on my Foundation bitch, Ch Bleugrass Jolie` Of Buena Vista, CGC, TDI, ROM. She was such a 🥰.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include brindle and white, black brindle and white, and black and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

  • Patellar Luxation

  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Brucellosis, Congenital Deafness (BAER, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

We've owned Bostons since 1987-2025 and were reputable breeders from 1988-2015, having produced 13 AKC Champions who finished rather quickly. In February, we lost our precious "Dino," but have the last Boston from our own breeding, "Lucia," who is now 9 yrs old. After serious thought, we decided to find another boy whom we could love and who could share life with our Lucia. The highest honor, we believe, one breeder can bestow on another Boston breeder is to trust that breeder and adopt a puppy from them. We searched the USA and Canada and decided that Sue and Lou were, indeed, worthy of such trust. Sue was thorough in vetting us and gave us her complete trust. Levels of trust having been established on both sides, we drove out to Green Bay eager to begin a journey of love for a puppy we had only seen in photos. On arrival, Sue and Lou greeted us with open arms, and we met our Santino, our new 5 month old boy. He was warm, affectionate, gentle, and we were content in feeling he could love us as much as we could grow to love him. We brought our 9 year old Lucia with us. Was she happy? Well, she snapped at him, gently letting him know she was hesitant at that moment. However, a long story made short, within one day, she adopted him as though she were his adoptive mother, and they cuddle, play, eat and sleep together. Santino is a structurally and emotionally sound and completely healthy Boston Terrier puppy who been taken care of by Sue and Lou. He had been given all the medical inoculations and examinations to certify that he was medically sound on the day he was adopted by us. Right now, we are enjoying this "goofy" little pup who is filling our hearts and the life of our Lucia. We suffered a terrible loss, but Santino is softening the hole in our hearts. If you decide to adopt a Boston pup, Sue and Lou will guarantee that you will have a healthy, sound and loving pup to cuddle and fill your lives.

Sue is the real deal! She is devoted to Boston Terriers and she is totally devoted to the puppies during the first few months of their lives! She has numerous medical tests conducted on the puppies and does cognitive training of the puppies as soon as they can move around. Sue went above and beyond to deliver my puppy to me and was extremely wonderful to work with throughout the process. I recommend her without reservation!

Sue, from ‘Achates Bostons’ breeds beautiful, healthy Boston Terriers. She is a very conscientious breeder who cares about the health and quality of her pups and takes great lengths to ensure they find well suited, safe homes. I met Sue in Green Bay to pick up our pup at 12 weeks. Our puppy was well prepared for travel as Sue acclimated him to the travel carrier. He arrived well socialized, healthy, and has been a great addition to our home. He also came with a care package which ensured that he had everything he needed to get off to a good start. Sue has also been great about answering any questions post adoption. We feel very lucky to have an Achates Boston and would highly recommend her as a breeder. We also recommend using the Good Dog application and contract process. It streamlines the process of purchasing and paying for a pup.
