I'm Kate D., the breeder behind Chicora Rhodesian Ridgebacks located in Columbus, NC. Our program is responsible and ethical, with a focus on quality over quantity; we fully health tests our dogs, and breed only occasionally, unlike the infamous puppy millers of the Carolinas.
Q. & A. with Kate
Why did you start breeding?
I had family friends who had ridgebacks, so I was familiar; when I graduated from college I did research for a dog of my own that must have these three qualities: toughness, loyalty and health. Rhodesians kept coming to the top of that list--the rest is history.
What makes your program special?
I'm focused on health testing. The Carolinas are known for puppy millers, who do the minimal amount of testing to get by, falsely proclaiming their dogs are "OFA and genetic" tested. You can pay now for a responsibly, well-bred dog, with a solid pedigree full of health tested multinational champions, or pay later for the vet bills that'll be the result of unproven, poorly-bred puppy-mill dogs.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are rd whtn blk nose. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Piper
Piper, 3 years old, is a rich red wheaten bitch out of Zealand and Kimber. (More info available on both on our webpage.)
Piper is wicked smart, lean (about 75 lbs. of pure muscle, and 28" tall), athletic and feminine in appearance. She is bossy (bitchy) in a new pack, but at the bottom of the pecking order in our own pack. I expect she will excel in lure coursing if we have time to get out on the field, but her true strength is in scent work; her offspring will have very strong drive for scent and sight work. Piper has had the following genetic and/or other health checks:
-OFA cardiac - clear
-OFA patella - clear
-OFA elbow - normal
-OFA hip - good
-OFA thyroid - normal
-Degenerative myelopathy (DM) - not a carrier
-Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (Rhodesian Ridgeback type) - clear
-Hemophilia B (Rhodesian Ridgeback type) - clear
-Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC) - clear
-Early Onset Adult Deafness (EOAD) - clear
-D locus: D/D blue, not a carrier
-B locus: B/B liver gene, not a carrier
-Full Dentition Scissor Bite
Good health testing
Patellar Luxation, Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy (JME), +5 more.

Breeder-Reported Testing
Good level
Chicora Rhodesian Ridgebacks reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Rhodesian Ridgebacks.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Cardiac Evaluation (registered with OFA)
Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Brucellosis
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
