Meet the breeder

I'm Abra K., the breeder behind Desert Kennels located in St Stephens, WY. My family ranch Collies enjoy children, hiking, herding, obedience trials, dog shows and agility. If you touch "their" van keys or their leashes you get "The Collie Chorus!" ready to somewhere, anywhere, anytime! 8 generation pedigrees include health, obedience, herding and titles.

Q. & A. with Abra

  • Why did you start breeding?

I would like to preserve the traditional family Collie so other people can have a chance to grow up like I did- with the love of a Collie. All of my foundation Collies were chosen from regional ranches, herding parents, therapy lines and spectacular family dogs. The traditional family farm collie is also almost the perfect service and assistance dog.
  • What makes your program special?

Personality and health are my 1st priorities because I live with my dogs and so do all of my puppy families. Gentle herding instincts and traditional temperament are what made the Collie a good family dog in the first place. I hope to preserve the unique breed that I love for future generations. I do enjoy the show ring when I have a Collie that enjoys it to.
  • What are the different breed coat types in your program?

Collie puppies include smooth and rough coat varieties. Coat types may vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies include blenheim and tri-color. Collie puppies include black white and tan, sable merle, sable, blue merle, and white. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Great level

Desert Kennels reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Collies.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)

Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.

  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Hyperuricosuria (HUU), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Cyclic Neutropenia, Grey Collie Syndrome (CN), von Willebrand Disease II (vWD II), PRA, Cone-Rod Dystrophy 2 (PRA-crd2), Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1), GenSol Diagnostics DNA Testing, Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), DNA Profile, Dermatomyositis

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Fabulous! Alba is a dedicated and knowledgeable breeder. We were able to make arrangements to meet half way. I would recommend her to anyone looking for their own “Lassie.”

After my recent loss of my Sheltie boy (well he was an old man actually 14.5, lol) I loved every phase of caring for him, and he for me. Naturally I was pretty devastated. I wasn’t sure if I should get another companion, however, one day while perusing Good Dog I came upon Abra and her Lady “Willow”. I had a Collie until I was five, and always wanted to have another one. However, I always just presumed it was out of my reach. Until I reached out to Abra and Dessert Kennels. She got back with me right away and explained everything. We talked for a long time, and I could tell how much she cares and loves her herd. Abra is beyond knowledable. Long story short, she was very attuned to who would be the right home for one of her beloved Collie’s to go to. We made plans and I drove from Denver to Wyoming to get my Angel Dog. I met with Abra and she went through absolutely every detail. How to take care of Willow, what she ate, her nuances (food hound, lol). What supplements to give her, how to groom, all of her obedience commands. We have kept in touch and I know I can reach out to her at any time. She truly Loves and Cares for the breed. Willow seamlessly came to her new home, she had won five Obedience Titles, so she came potty trained, polite, and playful at all the right times. She comes to work with me most days as I work at a Dog friendly office. Other days she is content hanging with our Big Silly Orange Tabby Cat. I am so grateful to Abra and Dessert Kennels, I sleep soundly at night, and I feel at peace again. As any Dog lover can attest to, loosing your companion is really tough. If I had more space I would take one of her puppies too:)

Abra was helpful and knowledgeable about the breed and what to expect bringing him home. She made sure we knew what he was being fed and what she was going to be sending him home with us. We're already so attached and couldn't be happier

Seven weeks ago, I lost Bella, my best friend of 13.5 years. As all dog lovers are aware, the pain was and still is overwhelming. I still have moments when I cry and long to just hug her one more time. After several weeks, my family started pushing me to adopt a puppy. I was not replacing Bella, because nothing could replace her in my heart or soul. But to provide another sweet animal with a safe and happy home complete with all the love they deserve. I decided I would look for a collie puppy but had no clue or knowledge of what I was looking for. After reaching out to several recuse sites and either getting no response or finding out the puppies were not located locally (800 to 1,500 miles away), not to mention the agency could not provide any background information. Additionally, I heard horror stories of how these animals were transported across the country. Unfortunately, by the time your dog arrived, they could have picked up numerous illnesses from other animals that had not had all their vaccinations or worming. Since we still have an older dog with cancer I couldn’t take that chance. I started looking at Good Dog. I checked the site reviews, read about several breeders, and found Abra Karhan, the owner of Desert Kennels. I quickly inquired about one of her collie pups, , and she called me within an hour to talk about the puppy. She was warm, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable in her role as a breeder, and an overall dog lover. After figuring out she was 1,610 miles away, I just about gave up. However, Abra did not give up, and spent her entire Sunday researching how to get this sweet puppy to me. She understood my concerns and did everything she could to assure me she cared about her puppies getting a safe and happy home. Most people would have just hung up and said so sorry, good luck, and moved on. Not Abra! She worked diligently to make it possible for this little girl to find a happy and loving home. She secured safe passage on Alaska Airlines, made sure the puppy had all her shots, worming, etc., and sent me all pertinent medical records, testing, as well as the vet contacts to make this adoption smooth and flawless. On October 16, we drove to Raleigh and picked up our little fluffy ball of joy. Additionally, Abra has continuously stayed in touch with me as a great resource while I am potty training Greta. I would strongly recommend if anyone is looking for a knowledgeable, compassionate, honest, and safe breeder, you should check out Abra’s website (Desert Kennels). She far exceeds any expectations that I had when I started my search.
