We went for a drive today to visit the best local pet store (Clean Run) and then came home and played in the leaves. A lot of excitement. Everyone was quiet in the car and did well crated (together). Got some cute pictures of them! I’ll go back and label who is who later today!

It’s week three for the puppies and they are working hard on their Puppy Culture curriculum. They’ve been walking over crinkly surfaces, navigating obstacles to get to food and more. They are amazing! Their personalities are emerging more and more and it’s beautiful to see their joy and stability with how they experience the world. I dremel their nails twice weekly and every puppy is handled often. We have safe visitors come daily to hold the puppies and play. We’ve gone for car rides, started crate training and have them using sod for housetraining (yes I lugged large pieces of sod into the whelping pens for training). Every day we listen to music, to vacuums and blenders and more. Each day is an adventure! Each week of development is so special and we make the most of it! They’ve have their first deworming, exams are scheduled for 10/30 and we are also scheduling BAER testing. All other genetic tests have been completed (and they are all clear!)

Border Collie
About Vala
Vala is gentle, loving, smart, mischievous and darling. She’s great at everything she does and is the ultimate partner whether it’s herding, obedience and house days. She’s done some competing and her pedigree has some real performance superstars in it! She’s an amazing blend of performance and herding lines. Her competition career was cut short due to a fluke knee injury but she still works on our farm and competes/trains for fun AKC sports. She’s an incredible pet with sweetness, charm, humor, and so much trust.

Ferry Hill Farm reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Border Collies.
Hip Dysplasia (rDVM, not registered), Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Vet Wellness Exam
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
DNA Disease Panel
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
