Meet the breeder

I'm Melissa Y., the breeder behind Hope Cavaliers located in Deerfield, NH. We are a small, in-home breeding program where we prioritize giving each dog and puppy the best care that we can. All of our dogs are loved as family members. We cherish all of our animals and enjoy sharing the love of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with other individuals and families!

Q. & A. with Melissa

  • Why did you start breeding?

I decided to breed Hope because I had to wait to get her and there aren't alot of Cavalier breeders in the area. She is the easiest dog I have ever had to train and she is affectionate and eager to please. I wanted to eventually have another Cavalier and also gift one to my granddaughter.
  • What makes your program special?

Hope is my only breeding dog. I am home with the puppies and use an educational program called Puppy Culture to raise the puppies. The puppies have been raised in my office and I spend several hours a day with them. They have been around people, young and old and my other dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include blenheim, ruby, black and tan, and tri-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Parent health testing

Hope Cavaliers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Episodic Falling Syndrome (EFS), Dry Eye Curly Coat Syndrome (CKSID), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Muscular Dystrophy (CKCS-MD)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
