Island Lake Yorkies

Joseph G.

Breeder of Yorkshire Terriers

Meet the breeder

I'm Joseph G., the breeder behind Island Lake Yorkies located in Fort Mc Coy, FL. We are home-based hobby breeders. Our Yorkies are bred for health and temperament with a focus on conformation, athleticism, and intelligence. We are dedicated to providing our families with wonderful, healthy family pets. We are happy to tell you more about what life with a Yorkie is like and how they will not only enhance your daily life, but exceed your expectations!

Q. & A. with Joseph

  • Why did you start breeding?

I was raised on a corn/soybean farm in Illinois where Yorkies were an intricate part of farm life. My grandfather was a great influence on me in breeding Yorkies; he was the man who everyone came to rid their farms, barns, and silos of vermin. I bought my first Yorkie from him at 8 years old and received .50 cents per rat on every job he took me on.
  • What makes your program special?

Each puppy is bred, raised, and loved indoors to ensure health, happiness, and harmony at the start of its life. We concentrate on matching our pups with the right families. We like to tell our clients that they didn't pick our pup, but that we picked them. It has been such a fulfilling journey!
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black and tan, blue and gold, and black and gold. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Great level

Island Lake Yorkies reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Yorkshire Terriers.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Brucellosis

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Animal Genetics Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
