I'm Laura S., the breeder behind Marshland Labradors located in Suffolk, VA. Our dogs are primarily our pets! They live in the house and stay with us until they pass. We do not re-home our breeding dogs when they retire. We breed for health, intelligence and agility. We prepare our pups to leave the litter by introducing them to the crate for rest and feeding.
Q. & A. with Laura
Why did you start breeding?
A breeder friend gave us an intact female when our dog died. She had been breeding for quite a few years - and said when the dog came into heat, she would like to breed her. We had the choice to do the whelping or she would do it. We didn't want our dog to live someplace else - so our friend coached us through the process - and while stressful - found we enjoyed it!
What makes your program special?
We do health testing to ensure we only breed healthy dogs. We only have 1 litter a year so we can afford to spend quality time with the puppies. We built a room inside the garage with climate control, added an outdoor pen accessible with a dog door, and pay for our vet to do a "farm call" for exams, shots, and microchips. We interview every potential buyer to make sure they're informed and prepared!
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
