Q. & A. with Cynthia

  • Why did you start breeding?

In 2003 we decided to share our home with a Cavalier King Charles named Hannah. She stole our hearts! We found out that everything you read about Cavalier King Charles spaniel is true. They are the most gentle and loving dogs. When they're awake the tail is wagging and they are eager to please. They want nothing so much as to be with you.
  • What makes your program special?

Our dogs are OFA Certified we have heart, patella, legg-calve- perthes, hip and elbows certified. and Micah, dad to all of our puppies, is genetically clear through his parents for curly coat syndrome and episodic fall syndrome. We start the puppies on Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) on day three. We also incorporate Puppy Socialization every week. Pet only
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include ruby and black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Oakdale Cavaliers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • Legg-Calve-Perthes (OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Coat/Trait Panel, Dry Eye Curly Coat Syndrome (CKSID)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
