I'm Debbie R., the breeder behind Prairie Feather Farm located in Trinidad, CO. Our dogs are excellent representations of their breed, and we are proud to offer our high-quality puppies to loving homes. Our program is focused on breeding Australian Shepherds that are healthy, well-structured, and have outstanding temperaments. We have high expectations for our puppies and strive to place each one in an enriching and loving home!
Q. & A. with Debbie
Why did you start breeding?
As I've said I have never considered breeding because my dogs were fosters and shelter dogs and I've never wanted to contribute to there being more homeless animals. When Ginny came into our life we were taken by her amazing athleticism, outstanding health, versatility and her incredible personality. Our journey into breeding began!
What makes your program special?
Our puppies are raised in our home as part of our family. They have a large playpen in our living room, an enclosed back porch to play on and lots of time outside as well. We interact with them constantly and are proud to have anyone come meet them in their first home.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are blue merle. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

About Ginny
Our beloved Miss Ginny has been the most welcome blessing in our life! She came to us for many reasons, none of which had to do with breeding her. She is our constant companion and the most affectionate versatile dog I've ever owned. Be it herding our sheep and goats, sitting under the desk at work, going on showings with clients, hiking and backpacking, or cuddling on the couch, she just wants to be with us wherever we are. Loving this beautiful girl and seeing her wonderful abilities and qualities started us on our journey to breeding her. We are very fortunate to have been mentored by some talented and knowledgeable breeders who have helped us along the way and matched Ginny up with by far my favorite sire I had been watching for over a year!
Prairie Feather Farm reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Shepherds.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
DNA Disease Panel, Multiple Drug Sensitivity (MDR1)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
