I'm Mike-Lori T., the breeder behind Royalheart Cavalier King Charles Spaniels located in Newfane, NY.
Q. & A. with Mike-Lori
Why did you start breeding?
30 years ago we owned our first pet cavalier who had a heart issue & died before the age of 9. During this time I did a lot of research and told my husband this was the most loving and unhealthy dog and once the children were older I wanted to concentrate on making a difference in helping to improve the breed. I have done rescue programs in the past and have several friends in the small breed rescue programs now that I help with placing dogs especially the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I also wanted to try and help the breed become stronger and healthier. My hopes for this breed is to eventually have them become more affordable for the average person.
What makes your program special?
The first 4 weeks I basically live in a bedroom with mom & pups. At 4 weeks I socialize/introduce them to the family dogs. At 6+ weeks they are introduced to outside family members, people who are on my list for a puppy and also friends (including senior citizens, special needs, & young children). We have several rooms that are set up for them to have a different view, sounds, and stimuli.
They have age appropriate toys, including balance boards, tunnels, music and other types of play time with their pack and with family/friends other than myself. When older they love jumping on & off a bean bag walking up padded stairs (3 steps) and just having fun. At 6 weeks we also start to potty train with a doggie door in a fenced in enclosure. At 8 weeks we introduce bells. Weening is later for Cavaliers so they stay usually until 10-12 weeks with us before they go to their new family home.
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include blenheim and tri-color. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
