Meet the breeder

I'm William A., the breeder behind Slater Kennels located in Houston, TX. We are producers of clear, OFA-tested, non-dilute, and titled Labradors from our own dams, selected through training and hunting, and paired with accomplished outside sires. If you are looking to get a puppy from health-tested, field-proven lines, we might have your next hunting or adventure buddy.

Q. & A. with William

  • Why did you start breeding?

I got into training Labradors from my love of duck hunting. Having trained many many dogs to hunt, I have also turned my attention to one of the most important aspects of a good gundog; a quality pairing. I have seen too many dogs that one could know simply by taking a look at the parents that the pairing shouldn't go forward, and I want to ensure the next generation of gundogs doesn't face that.
  • What makes your program special?

My financial incentive is low. I do this because I love it, not because I need to make money from it. The purchase price of these puppies does cover my expenses, but not by much. I do not say this to complain, but to explain that the majority of your cost goes to ensuring a great start for your pup, and that I am far more concerned with their health and development than with making a few bucks.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black and yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Parent health testing

Slater Kennels reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Labrador Retrievers.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Full Embark Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
