I'm Susan K., the breeder behind Swiftwater Flat Coated Retrievers located in Olympia, WA. We have been involve in flat coated retrievers since 1996. We only breed flat coats. We raise puppies in our home after careful selection of sire and dam for structure (adherence to our breed standard), temperament (friendliness, biddability, drive) and abilities (retrieving, swimming, scenting).

Why did you start breeding?
After getting my first flat coat in 1996 I began going to dog shows and being fascinated by the range of types and temperaments of flat coats I saw in the ring. I got my second flat coat in 2004 and after she earned her championship we did our first litter in 2007.What makes your program special?
I put a lot of thought into the pairings I choose, looking at all the qualities of each dog and at their pedigree and what I know of their lines from personal experience. Then I spend a huge amount of time handling puppies, giving them new experiences, observing and evaluating them. I have gotten great feedback from puppy owners about the matches I have chosen for them.What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies are black. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
Getting a puppy from Susan

Susan partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 8 weeks old.
“Puppies are matched to new owners based on multiple criteria: what owner wants to do with their dog (pet only, agility, field, show...), temperament of the puppy, and structure of the puppy. It is a weeks long process of observation and testing and consulting with other breeders. We have found our puppy buyers are very happy with the puppy we chose for them.”

About Kira
Kira is a very athletic, high drive dog. She loves to swim and retrieve and do agility. She works with me in my therapy practice. This will be her second litter. She had her first 18 months ago and it was a very lovely littter. She loves everyone and is quick to learn, eager to please.

Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Genetic Diversity Test
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
