I'm Dawn H., the breeder behind True North Bostons located in Holmes County, OH. My goal is to breed dogs for pets that are healthy, well-adjusted, and good representatives of the breed. I strive to complete all the breed specific health testing and certification for any sires/dams which would be used in my program to ensure the healthiest puppies. I use the Puppy Culture method to have well socialized puppies who will be confident and capable adults. I try to breed to the standard in order to have puppies which will be the lively, lovely Boston terrier!
Q. & A. with Dawn
Why did you start breeding?
My love for Bostons began in 2007 with my Boston terrier, Diesel. I soon found out they are the perfect pet with their bright, lively nature, their handsome tuxedo-like appearance, their portability and versatility. Since then, I have seen many dogs labeled as Bostons in a whole spectrum of colors who no longer resemble the iconic little dog with its compact, sporty, and short-muzzled appearance. This drives my goal to breed pets who are as true to the Boston Terrier standard as I can, in order to preserve the breed. With help from my mentors, I hope to be successful at that!
What makes your program special?
My program was not born of a desire to produce volume or income, and will NEVER be that. My dogs are my pets, first and foremost. I may occasionally have litters, if the dogs I have meet the strict criteria for breeding. I will be very selective with potential homes for any puppies I may have, as I want these puppies to be lifelong pets and family members of their new homes. Should a new home no longer be able to care for a dog from my program, I will take it back to ensure that none of my dogs end up in shelters or worse situations.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Excellent level
True North Bostons reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Boston Terriers.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Patellar Luxation
Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.
Congenital Deafness (BAER, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Hereditary (Juvenile) Cataracts (HC; JC)
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
