Meet the breeder

I'm Veronika V., the breeder behind Wagashiken located in Oceanside, CA. My dogs represent a lineage of highly renowned dogs from many countries—animals distinguished by their excellent health, and which have consistently produced outstanding offspring: uniform litters with a minimum of faults. My mission is to preserve the authentic Japanese type and temperament of these magnificent dogs.

Q. & A. with Veronika

  • Why did you start breeding?

My first Shiba Inu was of excellent quality and adhered as closely as possible to the Japanese standard. Other breeders encouraged me to show my dog; consequently, I gradually began to learn more and realized that I wanted to invest my knowledge and effort into showcasing and upholding the quality of this breed.
  • What makes your program special?

I do not chase after popularity, nor do I aim to perpetuate the breeding of dogs that are slowly but surely drifting away from true breed standards. I select each breeding pair with the utmost care. It does not matter to me which kennel a dog comes from, what bloodlines it carries, or how successful it has been in the show ring; what matters most to me are its type and merits. I spend countless hours studying the pedigrees of every dog connected to my breeding pair, in order to anticipate—from a long-term perspective—what results to expect.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include red and black and tan. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
