Q. & A. with Barbara
Why did you start breeding?
I grew up around my grandfather raising quality bird dogs for his hunting sport. I loved seeing newborn puppies and fell in love with seeing the miracle of birth and always said I would raise my favorite breed (cocker spaniels) someday when I was grown!
What makes your program special?
Being a respected, experienced breeder for 39.5 years, I have seen it all - I bought into inferior lines and through generations of W-O-R-K and show folks educating me, I have beautiful up to standard pups.
I have a group Facebook site where my cocker families enjoy sharing pictures, stories, comparing the litter mates, and sharing tips such as: house training, obedience/agility class enrollments
What are the different breed coat colors in your program?
Our puppies include buff and white, brown and white, black, silver, red, brown, black and tan, and buff. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.

Getting our Cocker Spaniel from Barbara Richard’s was a perfect experience! We were hesitant about buying online and Good Dog seemed very professional! We choose a puppy from the Richard’s and from start to finish I could not have asked for for a better experience. Barbara was so helpful and truly a wonderful breeder and lovely person! Our puppy is everything we hoped for, and more!!

Barbara was wondering to work with! She sent me pictures and kept me posted on my baby! She was so sweet when we met and sent us home with a goodie bag full of items. Definitely would recommend her to anyone looking for a cocker spaniel!

Barbara was willing to meet us part way with our puppy, saving us time and money. She kept us posted on how he was doing during his trip to meet his new family. He was groomed, had immunization records and came home with a gift bag full of toys and pertinent information. He’s a beautiful, healthy, active boy and we loved him at first sight! Transactions were easy and convenient and we couldn’t be happier that we found Good Dog and Barbara!

From the very start our experience of bringing little Bailey into our lives was perfect! We’ve been parents of cocker spaniels for over forty five years, and find the breed to be a great match for our family. The moment we saw a photo of ‘boy one with blue collar’ we were eager to learn more about him. We were put in contact with Barbara Richard’s Cocker Kennel through Good Dog, and were impressed. We corresponded through text and email. Barbara shared her experience of breeding cocker spaniels, gave us information on the ‘sire and dame’ and puppies in the litter, and sent a video of the puppy. We immediately began preparations for bringing the puppy into our home, and making arrangements for our journey to Pensacola.
We arrived filled with excitement and joy. Barbara warmly welcomed us and helped us with the introductions to ‘Bailey’ and his parents.
She had graciously prepared a ‘care package’ with a blanket, feeding dish, food, treats, and toys for Bailey. We went through the paperwork, and were told about his routine and habits during the past eight weeks.
Bailey is an affectionate, smart, and friendly puppy. It’s only been a week, and he’s adjusting beautifully to his new home. We couldn’t be happier!

Barbara was very easy to work with. She sent me pictures and video of Stormi. My family member flew down from MN to pick up the puppy and Barbara was willing to meet her at the hotel for a more comfortable area for the exchange. Stormi flew home the next day without a whimper on the flight. She is so very smart and adorable!

I am an experienced cocker spaniel owner, having had 4 cockers prior to purchasing one from Barbara. I wanted to wait a while to get to know my puppy before sharing my experience. She is now 5 months old. I was looking for a breeder that bred for good health and temperament, and I found one in Barbara Richards’s Cocker Kennel. Barbara is honest and easy to communicate with via email, phone, and text. She will share with you her experience, and answer any questions you may have. I reserved my puppy two weeks before her availability to go home with me. Barbara sent me several videos of my puppy, which gave me such joy. I was able to see the condition the puppies were kept, and met her dame. As well as see her sire and the other cockers Barbara is breeding. I see the care and work she has devoted to her puppies everyday in my puppy’s behavior. It is obvious the work Barbara put in to desensitize her puppies. My puppy is quick to roll on her back, and adores a good belly rub. She is unconcerned when I manipulate her paws. She has quickly learned to respond to the tone of my voice when she has done something I disapprove of. My puppy is showing all the attributes cocker spaniels are known for: being affectionate, and sensitivity to their owner’s cues. I could not ask for more from a breeder than Barbara has provided. If I ever want to purchase another cocker spaniel, Barbara Richards’s Cocker Kennel will be the first place I contact.
