Jessica E.

Breeder of Boxers

Meet the breeder

I'm Jessica E., the breeder behind Firebrand Boxers located in Gilbert, AZ. Firebrand is a family kennel training and exhibiting Boxer dogs in conformation, obedience and performance events for 20 years. We are doing everything we can to breed smart, obedient, happy and healthy dogs for you to love as much as we do!

Q. & A. with Jessica

  • Why did you start breeding?

I purchased my first Boxer in 2000 and trained her to show in AKC Obedience. She had numerous health issues and so, was retired early. I bought my first conformation prospect in 2002, and after encountering temperament issues, retired her. My third show dog was purchased in 2005, shown, health tested, and carefully bred to produce my first litter under the guidance of her breeder (my mentor).
  • What makes your program special?

I breed for temperament first, then health and then conformation. I temperament test each puppy with Avidog APET. I health test mom and require it if dad for genetic issues common to our breed. I show my dogs to ensure they conform to the standard. I try to incentivize my families to enter dog events by rebating $50 for each title they earn on my puppies. This ensures that they bond with their dog.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Good level

Firebrand Boxers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Boxers.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Thyroid (Autoimmune Thyroiditis, registered with OFA), Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Aortic Valve Disease, Brucellosis, Temperament Test

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Dilated Cardiomyopathy 1 (DCM1)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
