Meet the breeder

I'm Melissa M., the breeder behind JM Legacy Boxers located in Duncansville, PA. Jim and Melissa Mitchell have had boxers since 1994. They are the founders of JM Legacy Boxers in Pennsylvania. JM Legacy Boxers breed quality AKC boxers from health-tested parents. Our boxers are ARVC clear and DM negative and are born and raised in our home with much love. Show and companion puppies are available when we have a litter to approved homes. AKC proudly supports dedicated and responsible breeders. We encourage all prospective puppy owners to do their research and be prepared with questions to ask the breeder. Make sure you are not only choosing the right breed for you, but also that you’re getting it from the right individual.

Q. & A. with Melissa

  • Why did you start breeding?

We got into breeding for the love of the boxer. We didn’t know about health testing when we got our first few boxers. We loved our dogs so much, they were family and we learned about the importance of health testing and finding a quality boxer to preserve the breed. We wanted to help others find that for their families as well.
  • What makes your program special?

Our breeding program is special because our dogs are our family and they are raised and socialized in our home to be good, smart, and snuggly companions. We provide health testing, education and support to our buyers. Each pup is vet certified, immunized, dewormed, tails docked, dew claws removed, and provided with documentation of health tested parentage.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include fawn and brindle. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Good level

JM Legacy Boxers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Boxers.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Vet Wellness Exam

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM; SOD1A), Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
