Meet the breeder

I'm Jina E., the breeder behind Kalama Cavaliers located in Lead Hill, WA. I study (test) the pedigree, structure, and genetics of every Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pair prior to breeding, passionate about using holistic veterinary practices when caring for our dogs and raising puppies. It would be my pleasure to introduce your family to your next family member.

Q. & A. with Jina

  • Why did you start breeding?

I accepted a breeding pair from a family member. The female turned out to be pregnant and I was thrown in...hook, line, and sinker. I began researching and developing my breeding program and have never looked back. Much more is in my Blog: https://lifewithcavalierkingcharlesspaniels.com/blog/ I am the exclusive N.American Breeder written in the #1 NYBS "Cavalier Handbook" https://amzn.to/3olP1C4
  • What makes your program special?

The health & genetic wellness of the dogs in my care is my utmost priority! I offer responsibly bred, socialized puppies with health clearances (OFA & Embark) I screen all potential families to ensure that I am pairing puppies with the perfect homes. My dogs are part of my family and incredibly cherished companions. The pups I have allowed to leave are part of my Furever Family.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include blenheim, ruby, black and tan, tri-color, and chocolate. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

They live in my home and guardian homes.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Good level

Kalama Cavaliers reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Cardiac Evaluation (rDVM, not registered with OFA)

Heart testing reduces the chance of passing down congenital heart disease, which can cause a range of symptoms ranging from trouble exercising to heart failure.

  • Patellar Luxation

Knee testing reduces the chance of passing down Patellar Luxation, which results in the kneecap becoming displaced or dislocated and can cause mild to severe joint pain.

  • OFA/CHIC DNA Repository, DNA Disease Panel

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

I have nothing but resounding praises for Kalama Cavaliers and Jina!!! By a stroke of good fortune, Jina came highly recommended to me by someone entrenched in the Cavalier world. At the time, it was her exceptionally high health and well-being standards prior to breeding that made her stand out from other breeder recommendations. Today, after 10 months of working with her to secure a Kalama pup, it is ALSO her professional knowledge of the breed, experience and spectacular devotion to her litters that impress me beyond measure. She is a phenomenal breeder who always goes the extra mile!!!

Jina took away all the anxiety I had about adopting a puppy. The entire process was a total joy! I am totally confident that she gave my puppy the very best start possible. She continues to be so supportive, always there to answer questions and interested in Merry's progress.
