Meet the breeder

I'm Gina A., the breeder behind Koda Ranch located in Island Falls, ME. Quality is what counts. Whether a dog is in a show arena or cattle arena, they should work to the best of their and your abilities. Even though this breed is known to have "natural" instincts, the outcome is the direct result of the time and effort you are able to give and the dog's abilities.

Q. & A. with Gina

  • Why did you start breeding?

I had a friend who showed and bred Rottweilers where I spent most of my time helping her with her adults and puppies. I learned how to deworm and vaccinate and how to keep the puppies free from parasites. I knew one day I wanted to breed and started doing my research on different breeds. A friend of mine had an Australian Cattle Dog and once I met her, my mind was made up.
  • What makes your program special?

The first thing that makes my breeding program special is that I health test my dogs. I breed for the quality of the breed and have worked over the years to improve the breed. I am fortunate to say that after years of hard work, I now have all PRA, PRCD, PLL clear dogs in my breeding program.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Breeder-Reported Testing

Good level

Koda Ranch reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Cattle Dogs.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Congenital Deafness (BAER, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Primary Lens Luxation (PLL)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
