Meet the breeder

I'm Katriina V., the breeder behind Macushla Kennel located in Redding, CA. We raise family-oriented working dogs. Our puppies go on to be great family pets and working companions, hunting buddy, or your next show prospect. We breed both to provide families with loving and capable companions and to improve upon our dogs' fantastic traits with each generation.

Q. & A. with Katriina

  • Why did you start breeding?

I started with ACDs many years ago when we had more livestock. I was impressed with the natural Biddability of this breed and love their quirky nature and Velcro bond. I got into Cairn Terriers and showing some years later and greatly enjoy taking my terriers to AKC conformation events. Wonderful family dogs and spunky to boot! My Terriers are imported from EU, and I am building a foundation of healthy and bright Cairns for pet and show.
  • What makes your program special?

My foundation bloodlines were carefully researched and sought out, and thank you to some wonderful breeders here in the USA and in EU I am blessed to have some very nice dogs in my program. We strive to health test each breeding dog to the standards, starting with Full Genetic panels and moving on to OFA screening as well as Pennhip on certain dogs.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our Cairn Terrier puppies include wheaten, red wheaten, silver brindle, red brindle, red, brindle, and black. German Shorthaired Pointer puppies include liver roan and liver. Australian Cattle Dog puppies include blue speckled, blue mottled, and blue. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Katriina

Katriina has been certified by Good Dog’s screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you’re ready, reach out to ask about the puppies or anything else on your mind. You’ll get to know each other through messaging, phone, or video and pay securely, all on Good Dog.

After buyers complete the application and screening process, Katriina partners with them to find the best puppy match.

“As buyers are screened- we communicate clearly to let out buyers know what specific qualities and attributes each puppy has as my buyer selects their new family member.”

Price

Puppy prices include a $500 non-refundable deposit and between $1,500 - $2,500 final payment, before taxes & fees.

“Generally all pups sold come with AKC registration. We only offer Full AKC Registration on our best pups who check all boxes around 8 weeks of age to be show and breeding quality. Limited AKC registration will be offered with our other pups who will make excellent family and working dogs. If you want to reserve a puppy before 8 weeks of age, we ask for a $500 non refundable deposit to hold that pup. If for any reason the pup buyer does not like how the pup is developing, they can cancel reservation on that pup and their deposit will roll to the next upcoming litter.”

Breeder-Reported Testing

Great level

Macushla Kennel reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Cattle Dogs.

  • Hip Dysplasia

Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.

  • Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)

Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.

  • Congenital Deafness (BAER, registered with OFA)

A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.

  • DNA Disease Panel, PRA, Rod-Cone Degeneration (PRA-prcd), Primary Lens Luxation (PLL)

Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).

Our experience with Katrina was excellent. We couldn't be happier with Charlie. Katriina wrote a well written description of both the breed and Charlie as an individual. Her posting made me want to risk taking a long trip to see him. We've had to make astoundingly few corrections in his behavior and training (Aussies will test you). Katriina obviously not only cares about her breed but about the individual dog as well. We're so happy to have Charlie as the new member of our family!

After a long 10 hr drive, I met with Katrina and received my little Ixia. ❤️ She is healthy and happy. She slept the 10hr drive back and, while we're going through the exciting piranha stage, she is learning her French commands and showing her intelligence already. More and more mottling is showing up every day and I'm so excited to see the dog she will become. ♡

Katriina was absolutely amazing! So much knowledge and has raised a beautiful Dog "Leo". It has been 2 weeks since we picked him up and he is absolutely remarkable. Smart intelligent has already picked up on so many different kinds of commands. He stays inside and he already goes to the door when he needs to go to the bathroom after only having him for 2 weeks. I would totally recommend anybody that would like a beautiful, smart, incredible animal. Please get a hold of Macushla Kennel and Katriina. Katriina and their breeding process and training before you ever get the puppy is incredible. Leo is so smart, It blows me away. Thank you once again for such an amazing dog.

Kate was awesome, she gave us regular puppy updates, pictures, and videos throughout the process. She offered to meet us closer, but we decided to make a road trip out of it. Our pup, formerly Theo, came with a puppy starter kit and records which included his vaccination history. He's a great doggie!

Katrina was very helpful about finding the best fit for our family. She’s very knowledgeable about Austrialian Shepherds and even gave us some basic training lessons at pick up. She was flexible with our timing for pick up as well. She gave us a welcome packet, easy records to follow, and answered any questions after we had him. Thank you Katriina!
