Meet the breeder

I'm Kayla F., the breeder behind Wheatland Retrievers located in Derby, KS. We are experienced puppy raisers and professional dog trainers. Using our extensive background in dog training along with Puppy Culture and Avidog protocols, we take immense pride in producing puppies that are exceptional family pets, competition prospects, hunting partners, and service dogs.

Q. & A. with Kayla

  • Why did you start breeding?

I bought my first Australian shepherd in 2012, I was immediately in love with the breed. In 2015 I bought my first well bred conformation dog, enrolled in Starmark Academy - School for Dog Trainers, and bred my first litter. The rest has been history! I love being able to blend my training background with puppy raising and helping educate new owners.
  • What makes your program special?

As a dog lover, the answer is that you won't find somebody more committed to their dogs, and the puppies they produce, than me. From a trainers perspective, I believe my program is special because of my emphasis and experience with cognitive behavior and building conditioned responses. I'm able to give puppies a huge advantage by building and reinforcing desired behaviors from day 1.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black and yellow. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.

Getting a puppy from Kayla

Kayla has been certified by Good Dog's screening team for responsible and trusted breeding practices. When you're ready to reach out, feel free to ask any questions about the breed, their program, or specific puppies.

Kayla partners with buyers to find the best match as the puppies develop and their personalities take shape. Typically, matches are finalized when the puppies reach about 7 weeks old.

"Puppies are handled extensively every single day, and beginning at around five weeks we will work with puppies individually 2-3x a week. At 7 weeks old, puppies will receive a formal Volhard temperament test performed by a 3rd party trainer. Then they'll have their vet exam where they'll receive a comprehensive physical exam with the goal being to uncover any and all abnormalities that could present at that age (heart murmur, umbilical hernia, undescended testicles, recessed vulva, etc.). We will then take all of the information from our training sessions, temperament tests, and vet exam and match the puppy that best suits the wants and needs of each family. If it is determined we don't have a puppy that is the right fit for a family, we will refund the deposit"
