I'm Renee M., the breeder behind Maywood Goldens located in Newport, VA. Temperament and longevity are two of our biggest "must-haves" and we aim to produce that classic golden retriever who will be a loved family companion for years to come. Though we do compete with our dogs and would love it if you did, too, they are first and foremost a part of our family.
Q. & A. with Renee
Why did you start breeding?
As soon as I bought a house, I fulfilled my lifelong dream of having a Golden Retriever. But, my first Golden had more health and behavioral issues than I can count, including 4 different cancers. After several years of working in rescue, I started to research pedigrees. Eventually, I decided to take the leap into breeding putting health and longevity as a top priority over winning in competition.
What makes your program special?
My breeding program was founded to produce service dogs. This forced me to look beyond blue ribbons and truly evaluate the dog. I do compete with my dogs, and our goals have shifted away from service work for now, but I still breed first for a healthy, versatile, intelligent dog I want to live with.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home.
