Good Dog collects and files sales tax on final puppy payments made through our platform.
When do I pay sales tax?
You'll pay sales tax when you make your final payment for your puppy. At that time, sales tax will be applied to your entire taxable transaction, including any deposit you've already made, the final payment amount, and any additional services your breeder includes in that final payment invoice, like transportation or boarding.
How is sales tax calculated?
For puppy deposits and final payments: Sales tax is based on the puppy's pickup location.
For any additional services (i.e. transport, training, etc.): Sales tax is calculated automatically based on the breeder’s location.
For puppy purchases specifically, the pickup location determines the tax rate, not where you live or where the breeder is located. This means:
- If you live in a state without sales tax but pick up your puppy in a state that has sales tax, you'll pay the pickup location's rate
- If you're picking up in a different state than where you live, you'll pay the pickup location's tax rate
What will I see on my invoice?
Sales tax appears as a separate line item on your final payment invoice. You'll see each component of your transaction listed separately—the puppy price, any deposit, any additional services, Good Dog Protection & Support, and any applicable processing fees—with sales tax calculated on the total and shown as its own line item.
This gives you a clear breakdown of exactly what you're paying for versus the tax being collected.
What if I need to change my pickup location?
If your plans change, you or your breeder can cancel the final payment request and send a new one with the updated pickup location. The sales tax will automatically recalculate based on the new location.
