Meet the breeder

I'm Tonya S., the breeder behind Schaefer's Miniature American Shepherds located in Garysburg, NC. We believe that every dog has something special to offer, be it on the herding field, in the conformation ring, participating in performance events, a service dog or as a devoted family member. We strive to produce pups that are physically and mentally capable of fulfilling their potential.

Q. & A. with Tonya

  • Why did you start breeding?

I have owned Australian Shepherds since 2002 so I have a lot of experience with where this breed has come from and want to assist in where this beautiful, smart breed is going. I wanted to make sure the minis retained the brains and beauty of the Aussies just in a smaller package. I bought a beautiful girl that I thought embodied exactly what I needed to produce pups that would meet the breed standard.
  • What makes your program special?

All my dogs are tested Full Panel through Paw Print Genetics before breeding. I have hips, elbows, and patellas done and results are always submitted to OFA and made public. I do CERF testing for the eyes to make sure those are certified also. Almost all of my dogs have at least 1 championship title, some have 2 (AKC & UKC). All of my dogs have at least 1 title after their names, some have 2, 3 or more.
  • What are the different breed coat colors in your program?

Our puppies include black, red merle, blue merle, and red. Colors will vary depending on the parent dogs.
  • Where do your breeding dogs live?

    They live in my home.
