I'm Karacel H., the breeder behind Redstart Australian Cattle Dogs located in Dillonvale, OH. All of our dogs are bred to the AKC breed standard for the Australian Cattle Dog. We do all required health testing for CHIC certifications, and make results public on OFA. Temperament is always first priority. We are very active in multiple performance events, and conformation.
Q. & A. with Karacel
Why did you start breeding?
I started breeding with the goal of preserving the breed standard. I'd like to show and trial the dogs that I have produced and also improve on temperament, as well as make sure health is also considered before any breeding plans are made.
What makes your program special?
I am very active in multiple dog sports, and my dogs are very versatile and willing to do just about anything you would want to do with them, from conformation prospects, to performance, or just family pets. My dogs are extremely well socialized, and have all appropriate health testing with passing results.
Where do your breeding dogs live?
They live in my home and a kennel on my property.

Clarice, mom
Australian Cattle Dog
About Clarice
Clarice is a very special girl. My first born puppy, my first bred-by champion, grand champion, & over-half way to grand champion bronze all completely breeder-owner-handled. She also won an award of merit at the 2021 ACDCA national specialty. She's definitely something in the show ring, and outside of it. Clarice is what I would consider medium-drive, ready to go but with an off switch. She's very trainable and intelligent, sometimes a bit too smart for her own good. She's 100% a mama's girl, and will likely snub you if you try to pet her. Well socialized and amendable to handling, but does not believe strangers to be worthy of petting her. She gets called Princess Clarice quite a bit. When she's not sleeping on her throne, (which is probably my lap or pretty close to it) Clarice enjoys following me around usually so closely that I can't find her, then proceed to trip over her. She also enjoys a good game of fetch, as long as she gets a cookie as trade for returning her ball (see that too smart for own good comment above). Clarice is also a great model for pictures, and stands out in the crowd with her eye catching color and confidence. Structurally she's a good example of the breed, her front is straighter than desired but she has a nearly perfect rear, good topline, and lovely head piece. Health wise she's PLL, PRA, DM, NCL5 clear, RCD4 carrier. Hips OFA good. Elbows OFA normal. BAER normal. Eyes normal.
Lucille, mom
Australian Cattle Dog
About Lucille
Lucille was my first Australian Cattle Dog. She introduced me to the breed, and to many of the different AKC sports. Lucille is what I would consider medium-drive. She is always ready to go, but does have an off-switch and can occupy herself by chewing on her toys. She is a bit more on the friendly side, well-socialized from 8 weeks on to all kinds of environments so she's not as protective as some ACDs can be. She doesn't mind attention from strangers and will roll over for a belly rub, but doesn't seek it like some breeds would, but she's easily amendable to handling for showing. Her favorite past times include; playing with her jolly ball, chasing plastic bags in fast CATs and coursing, rolling around in the grass, and doing anything that gets her a few extra cookies. She's very intelligent and trainable, making her good at rally and obedience events. She has always gotten along well with other dogs. Lucille is PLL, PRA, RCD4, DM, & NCL5 clear. Eyes normal. Hips OFA good. Elbows OFA normal. BAER (hearing) normal. Structurally I consider Lucille to be a good example of the breed. She has her flaws like all dogs. Her topline is a bit weaker than preferred, and her rear is a bit straight but her front angulation is better than a lot of dogs in the breed, along with her tight feet, good substance and bone, and typey head. All things considered she's a beautiful girl along with her stable temperament, and passing health results - beautiful inside & out.

Niki, mom
Australian Cattle Dog
About Niki
Niki was bred by Bob & Mandy Peniston of Royal ACDs in Missouri. Her sire Lefty owned by Vicki Fowler was the first ACD that I really came to admire after getting involved in the breed. So having a Lefty puppy was definitely a dream of mine! Niki is a by-the-books Australian Cattle Dog. If you read the description in the breed standard regarding temperament, you've just read a description of Niki! Niki is protective of her home & humans, but more friendly in a public setting due to being exposed to dog shows starting at a young age. Niki definitely has natural herding ability, she has been exposed to sheep only on a handful of occasions but has showed great potential. Structurally she's a moderate, balanced example of the breed. She is what I would consider high-drive, and is a dog that needs to be kept busy. Her favorite pass times include; playing/swimming in anything that has water in it (including water bowls), hunting for rats in Barn Hunt, chasing plastic bags in Fast CATs & coursing ability, playing fetch, and chewing on her favorite jolly balls. She is very alpha female to her other kennel mates, and can be a bit stubborn at times, but she has a heart of gold and loves to please her humans!
Niki is PLL, PRA, RCD4, NCL5 & DM clear. OFA hips fair. OFA elbows normal. BAER (hearing) normal. Eyes normal. OFA CHIC #153909

Parent health testing
Breeder-Reported Testing
Good level
Redstart Australian Cattle Dogs reports to performing the health tests below on their breeding dogs. Ask your breeder about the tests performed on the parents of your litter. Learn more about health testing for Australian Cattle Dogs.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip testing reduces the chance of passing down hip dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause hip pain and the eventual loss of the function of the hip joint.
Elbow Dysplasia Finals (OFA, BVA, SV, FCI)
Elbow testing reduces the chance of passing down elbow dysplasia, which is primarily found in large breed dogs and can cause arthritis in the elbow joint and front leg lameness.
Eye Certification (CAER, registered with OFA)
Eye testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide range of hereditary eye illnesses including retinal dysplasia, lens luxation, and glaucoma, which can cause impared vision or blindness.
Congenital Deafness (BAER, registered with OFA)
A breeder may perform additional tests on their dogs that do not fall into these general categories. These tests may be more uncommon or very specific to a particular breed.
Genetic testing reduces the chance of passing down a wide variety of hereditary diseases of differing prevalence and severity such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (an eye disease) and Von Willebrand's Disease (a blood disease).
Health testing is one key piece of responsible breeding and is performed on breeding dogs to prevent the presence of heritable conditions in their puppies.
